Dane County African Americans Have Higher Cancer Rates

A recent study by the Cancer Health Disparities Initiative revealed disparities within the cancer-related health of Dane County residents. Among the findings is that African Americans in Dane County were 30 percent more likely than whites to be diagnosed with cancer. Read more about the report and the additional disparities it uncovered


An Evolutionary Chess Match: Discovering What a Virus Knows


Viruses are smart. Smarter perhaps even than us. Some viruses learned to "hide" within the cell and persist for the life of the host. Researcher Robert Kalejta, PhD, and his lab are working to uncover how the virus controls its own gene expression. By doing so, they can learn about basic cellular processes that might be applicable to other areas of research, including cancer. Breast Cancer Patient Survivor Advocate Program


The UW Health Breast Center's Patient Survivor Advocate Program is a "buddy system" that pairs patients with a trained breast cancer survivor volunteer to answer questions about managing a breast cancer diagnosis. Learn how the program helped a recent patient

  • July 18-19: Hope Fest. A two-day event to raise money to support those who have been affected by cancer and other illnesses.
  • July 21: Heads Up! Golf Outing for Head and Neck Cancer Research. Proceeds from the golf outing benefit head and neck cancer research and services in Human Oncology, Otolaryngology and the UW Carbone Cancer Center.
